[PICS] Wagashi chef crafts amazing edible characters with leftover scraps

Wagashi are traditional Japanese sweets usually made from mochi, bean paste, or fruit. If you’ve been to Japan or a nice Japanese restaurant, perhaps you enjoyed one sculpted to look like a flower, crane or some other very old-fashioned Japanese image.

Like most things in Japan, no matter how venerable, give it enough time and it will be kawaii-ified. Enter sweets shop Kuramoto Hinode, where a veteran wagashi chef has begun crafting anime and pop culture based sweets with leftover bits and bobs.

The chef is the fourth generation to work in the family sweets shop in Tokushima Prefecture and has been crafting traditional wagashi for about 12 years.

One day, he had some bits of dough left over and thought that he could make a Kinnikuman figure. After that, he began making sweets for his family and friends based on Pokémon, Doraemon and other popular series. He estimates he’s made about 400 different characters at this point.

Unfortunately, if you were hoping to nibble on a Niobat or chomp on a Chocobo, these cute characters are not for sale, as the chef says he does them just as a hobby and only when the mood takes him. However, he does post pictures of his new creations on his Twitter account, so at least you can feast your eyes on them.

VAMPS Premieres New Song Onstage and Online

The jolly roger is a flag which signals that pirates are about to attack. And as of yesterday, June 06, “THE JOLLY ROGER” would also be known as VAMPS’ proclamation that they are taking their quest for international success to even greater heights.

The song was performed live for the first time at the “VAMPS LIVE 2014: LONDON PRE-LIVE” which happened yesterday at ZEPP TOKYO. Not long after, online streaming of the song has become available via Spinefarm Record’s soundcloud account.

If the song sounds familiar, that’s because part of it has been used in the Nissan X-Trail commercial which aired in Japan from January of this year. Back then it was credited as “World’s End”.

No word yet if “THE JOLLY ROGER” would have a physical release. It will be available though for digital distribution on the following dates and countries:

June 09: United Kingdom
June 10: USA / Mexico / Canada / Spain / France
June 11: Japan
June 13: Germany
And just in case you are curious about Spinefarm Records which released the song online: Spinefarm Records is a part of the Universal Music Group. It functions as an independent business unit focusing on heavy metal artists. Artists in their roster include rock heavyweights Children of Bodom, Nightwish and Rammstein. The label also handles in the UK the careers of visual kei bands D’espairsRay and MUCC.

Here’s the link to the song on soundcloud.

Don’t forget also that if you’re in the UK, you can catch VAMPS live at the Pepsi Max Stage of Download Festival this June 14.

What type of girlfriend are you? (Based on your bangs style)

When you’re a little unsure about your love interest, what or who do you turn to for advice? Most of us have read one of those horoscope love readings at least once in our lifetime. In Japan, many people believe that a person’s blood type has influence on their personality traits. This may sound slightly silly, but blood type is a factor some Japanese consider when choosing a date.

Recently, however, a new personality prediction trend has been getting popular among girls in Japan. It seems that the way a girl styles her fringe (or bangs) gives away hints about her relationship personality! Guys, you might want to pay more attention to your love interest’s hairstyle from now on!

1. Bangs of average length and thickness

This style suggests that both your mind and body are satisfied. You seem to take initiative not only in relationship matters, but also in other activities such as your hobbies. It might be an understatement to say that you have a strong desire for love. A man who can also be your playmate or hobby-mate might be the best match for you.

2. Thick, straight-cut bangs that cover your forehead

Hiding your forehead suggests that your heart is closed and you are passive towards love relationships. You also secretly wish to be seen as a lovable lady by the people around you. Perhaps you have experienced some sort of trauma in the past, causing you to shut others out. It would probably take a determined, patient man who wouldn’t mind taking the time and effort to slowly pry open your heart in order to be with you.

3. Left-side parting (often seen on idols such as AKB48)

The left side of our body is said to be the “female side”, thus this style suggests that you are inclined towards a feminine thinking process and tend to switch between putting up a front and speaking from your heart. Instead of putting yourself on the line, you prefer to take on supportive roles. You guard your heart carefully and tend to be timid when facing love relationships, which could be why you have difficulty in finding a partner. However, deep down inside, you harbor a desire to gradually bridge the distance that isolates you from guys.

4. Right-side parting

The right side of our body is said to be the “male side”, thus this style suggests that you lean towards a masculine thinking process, often thinking about things in a straightforward manner. This shows that you are comfortable with putting yourself out there and taking the initiative when it comes to matters of the heart. However, being overly ambitious might cause guys to think that you are selfish and always want to have your way. You would probably leave a better impression on soft-spoken, gentle guys, or males who are younger than you.

5. Bangs that sit above your brows

This style shows that you are confident in yourself, and suggests that once you fall for someone, you are likely to go all out to pursue that special someone. You are generally tolerant, but you have a strong desire to be understood by your partner, and that may be the cause of arguments. Due to such a personality, you tend to be attracted to mature guys who are skilful in handling women, or men who are broad-minded and accepting.

6. Centre parting or exposed forehead

This style suggests that you tend to take initiative in communication. You often find yourself setting the flow at mixer parties. Being overly aggressive in making conversation may result in you talking too much. That aside, you generally leave a good impression on guys. You have a soft spot for praises and flattery, and might easily fall for someone who showers you with such words.

Pesona, modern office building in Japan and also there’s a farming ground inside!

Creating agricultural systems in a busy country in Japan is almost impossible. Considering limited space in Japan. But, however this limitation is not an obstacle to making urban agriculture. An extraordinary concept of urban agriculture emerged in Japan. Not only the exterior of the building is greened, inside the building there are also agricultural land which can actually produce fruit and vegetables.

In the midst of busy financial district office buildings in Tokyo, this building is called Pasona, a multi-national recruitment company. When a company is in need of a new office, they hire a famous architect Japan Yoshimi Kono to help renovate, building 9 floors and decorate with ‘fertility’ and green walls.

Not only limited to the exterior of the building, greening was also conducted in the building. There is an urban agriculture facility that occupies approximately 20% of all office space covers 200 types of fruits, vegetables and rice. Office workers in turn helps maintain and harvest crops. Most of the agricultural products will be presented at the office canteen.

Using hydroponic farming systems, crop share office space and employees. For example, tomato plants hanging over the conference table, which is used as a partition tree space for meetings, salad leaves that grow in the seminar room and bean sprouts that grow under the bench. The main lobby is also equipped with rice and broccoli fields. The plant is equipped with HEFL, fluorescent and LED lighting and automatic irrigation systems.

An advanced technology air humidity is able to control the climate, temperature and wind to balance human comfort during working hours and to optimize plant growth after business hours. The technology used to maximize results. All plants are maintained and harvested by employees assisted by agricultural experts.

Pasona urban farm system does not only show the beauty and visual aesthetics. Pasona is a superb concept how to create a comfortable working environment to improve productivity and mental health of employees who work in this place. Besides the existence of charm can be a means to establish social interactions that involve the wider community to showcase the benefits of urban agriculture and technology.
